Understanding textured skin

What is textured skin?

Skin texture is the natural surface appearance, feel or condition of the skin. Ideally, it should be smooth, supple, and soft but sometimes it tends to become textured. The signs? Dull, rough, bumpy, patchy, dry skin.

Uneven skin texture is neither well-known nor talked about often despite being a common skin condition. The good news is that textured skin isn’t as complicated as it sounds. It doesn’t need fixing but if you want to enhance your skin, it can be managed. Read on to know more about what causes textured skin.

5 causes of textured skin

  1. Sun damage and environmental pollution

Environmental pollution and sun damage caused by direct exposure to the sun increase the possibility of textured skin. Sun damage on facial skin tends to cause unwanted premature ageing which is associated with textured skin. This shows up in the form of dry patches and bumps.

  1. Reduced collagen levels

When we start to age the skin’s natural ability to produce collagen goes down. The skin being unable to repair and regenerate new skills results in a dull appearance and other signs of textured skin.

  1. A buildup of dead cells

The skin ends up becoming textured when dead skin cells build up on the skin barrier. This is, in fact, the most common cause of textured skin. Failure to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin is a habit we all could do without.

  1. Acne scarring

If you’ve experienced acne in the past, the chances that you have textured skin are high. Acne tends to leave behind scars which in turn cause textured skin.

  1. Smoking

Smoking alters the flow of blood to the face which automatically interferes with the skin receiving nourishment and nutrients to keep it supple and soft. Smoking unfortunately results in textured skin in the long run.

7 tips for textured skin

  1. Wear SPF 30+

Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and above daily and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. Do this even when it is cloudy and ensure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to make sure you are shielding yourself from both sun damage and premature skin ageing.

  1. Hydrate

Hydration is key. Keep loyalty to your 8 glasses of water a day. Space your water breaks to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day.

  1. Use textured skin treatments

Vitamin C has antioxidants that fight damage caused by free radicals. Shop our “I Am Brilliant” vitamin C sheet masks for healthy, glowing skin here. Niacinamide is also filled with antioxidants and helps improve skin texture. Shop our curated by Uncover Niacinamide 10 brightening ampoule here.

  1. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week

Exfoliating is necessary to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores over time revealing a fresh layer of skin. Our Neulii exfoliating toner pads are the perfect balance between physical and chemical exfoliation and are infused with BHAs and PHAs that work together. The latter hydrates and smoothes the skin. Shop Uncover skincare Neulii exfoliating toner pads for sensitive skin here.

  1. Moisturise

We know it sounds counterproductive to add oil to the skin to prevent excess oil from being produced but that’s exactly what you should be doing! The body produces excess sebum to compensate for what you’re not feeding your skin. A non-comedogenic moisturizer (one that does not clog your pores) is a textured skincare routine must-have. Shop our non-comedogenic Neulii natural squalane desertica moisture cream to increase the moisture content of your skin here.

  1. Boost collagen levels

Boosting collagen levels through adjusting your diet, taking supplements, and getting regular massages will in turn boost the radiance of your skin. Incorporate fish, berries, citrus fruits, chicken, red and yellow vegetables, leafy greens, avocados, and white tea into your diet.
